G/A TERRAIN SYSTEMS
[GA TAWS]
Part Number: Terrain Sys. Choices

Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT)

is one of the leading cause of fatal accidents and has lead to the developement of various systems, some mandated, to help pilots be Aware and Warn them of a situtation, which if left uncorrected, could result in CFIT.  Early on, Radar Altimeter Systems (RAD/ALT) became common and were able to measure the distance between the aircraft and the terrain directly below it. The early Groung Proximity Warning System (GPWS), mandated on Air Transport aircraft for many years, have given way to Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning Systems otherwise commonly know as Terrain Awareness and Warning Systems (EGPWS/TAWS) use GPS positioning and detailed Terrain Data Base information along with Air Data, RAD/ALT, and various other inputs, to provide Annunciated, Audiable and Pictorial Situtational Warnings of Terrain Conflicts.  Class B TAWS is required for Part 91 aircraft as well as Class A for Part 125/135, Air Transport, and now Heli TAWS specifically for rotorcraft operators.
